About Victor Albea
Tutoring Services

OUR APPROACH

1. Understand Basic Mathematics Concepts - My approach to tutoring mathematics begins with the traditional basics of mathematics.  My goal is to build students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics to ensure they are able to apply skills learned to new situations.

2. Develop Critical Thinking Skills

Critical thinking skills are needed for problem solving every day, and enable students to make wise, rational decisions rather than reactive ones. During our tutoring sessions, students are encouraged to think through logical steps and apply reasoning to solving problems.

3. Implement/Identify a Methodical Approach to Problem-Solving - Mathematics testing, as with testing in many other subjects, has been relegated to multiple choice assessments as opposed to having students assessed on their knowledge of the methodical approach to problem completion.  My hope is that students leave me with the knowledge and ability to identify the appropriate methodical approach to problem completion, as opposed to simply relying on “beating a test.”

I provide a service which requires the student to demonstrate a step-by-step process towards completion of each mathematic problem assigned.  It is not my desire to have students resort to process of elimination or the “plug and chug” approach of inputting answers in an attempt to select the correct answer for simply passing a test

Victor Albea

I am Victor R. Albea, and I have successfully tutored students in mathematics for over 35 years.  I began tutoring while a student at Menchville High School in Newport News, Virginia.  My love for mathematics led me to take the Calculus Advanced Placement test during my senior year of high school.  My score resulted in me being exempt from the first two classes of Calculus at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) State University where I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.  As a first-semester college student, I was recruited by my mathematics instructor to work with the university’s learning center where I tutored fellow university students in mathematics.

Upon graduation from North Carolina A&T, I returned home and worked as a substitute teacher in the Newport News Public School System prior to being employed at Newport News Shipbuilding, where I spent over 27 years as a Mechanical Engineer, Nuclear Engineer, and Nuclear Instructor while continuing to privately tutor students in mathematics.  With the desire to encourage and support youth in Newport News, I volunteered in numerous mentorship programs for Newport News Shipbuilding at Huntington Middle School, Newsome Park Elementary School, and the An Achievable Dream Academy, where I served as the volunteer coordinator for the program in which Newport News Shipbuilding partnered with An Achievable Dream Academy.
